My 10 year Journey with Raw Food

My journey to raw food has been a long evolution. I like to consider myself a health nut. I only want to eat the best quality food, and raw food is the purest. But the path to get where I am now was not easy. I grew up in an Italian family, where cheese was a food group. Lucky for me, I never liked it very much, so I never got addicted. As a teen I started eating a mostly vegetarian diet, though it was heavy in dairy like ice cream and yogurt.

In my 20’s I got really sick and was diagnosed with Crohns disease (later to be told I actually had Ulcerative Colitis). I researched high and low about any diet that could help me get off of horrible medications i was taking, including prednisone. After a lot of trial and error I found that a vegan diet kept my symptoms away, along with my necessary medication. For years I struggled to get off of medication. I would dabble in raw foods, but my stomach couldn’t handle it. I read a few books about people who had cured themselves with raw food and I had high hopes that one day that would be me. Though my vegan diet helped substantially, my body was still protesting.

Finally, I was at the end of the road and I needed to have surgery to remove my colon. This was my only option as I had cancer cells all over my colon. I needed a “bag” for 7 months in between my three surgeries. Once my colon was removed, my small intestine played the roll of the large intestine/colon. I felt better than ever. My diseased colon was making me so ill that no diet was going to help. I was finally off all medication and able to enjoy any food I wanted without pain or illness. I was so excited that I could now eat such a quality diet with no symptoms. Raw food was always my goal.

I had my last surgery over a year ago and I haven’t had any symptoms since. I even had a baby in that time. My diet has become very high in raw foods since my first surgery. My energy level and quality of life has improved dramatically. I attribute my continual good health, after the procedures, on my raw food diet. I’m finally able to give my body the food it craves.

I find now that raw food keeps my stomach healthy because I never have blockages. All the probiotics in fermented foods help my digestion.

I love everything about my plant-based lifestyle and hope that now I have a chance of living a long healthy life. Raw food came into my life almost 10 years ago and I am now enjoying all the amazing benefits.

One of my favorite foods to eat/drink are smoothies. I love that you can add all sorts of superfood goodies to make them even more powerful! I make healthy smoothies at least 4 times a week…my family and friends always love my newest concoctions!

Here is my recent favorite:

  • 1 cup of frozen cherries
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 1.5 cups of coconut water
  • 1 tbsp of chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp of barely grass juice powder

INSTRUCTIONS:

Mix all ingredients in a high speed blender and enjoy. Don’t forget to chew your smoothies to help with digestion!
